Disclosure: Nassyam Basha and I have worked together (awesome person). There is CLI version for DBUA which is great since many authors typically present just one option. It's a very extensive book with many good details for upgrade and migration. Even has Goldengate.

Rarely do I give a book 5 stars. But this one hits the mark. Well written. No grammatical errors. Topics are spot on. Keep up the good work.

I had the privilege of being selected as a Technical Reviewer for this book. All to often over the course of my Oracle DBA career, I see questions on various forums asking about different upgrade and migration procedures. Some questions have obvious answers such as read the Oracle Upgrade Guide for your version. Other questions aren't as easy, like how to I migrate to ASM (see Chapter 6 of this book) or how do I upgrade when I have a standby database in place (discussed in Chapter 8). This book makes it easy to understand how to migrate from one OS to another. My personal favorite chapter was the one discussing Database Downgrades (Chapter 13). I once asked on the My Oracle Support Communities how many people have actually practiced a database downgrade and hardly anyone that responded to the poll has done so. If you want to ensure zero data loss a period time after you upgraded (like 1 week or 1 month or more), then you need to know how to downgrade the database. This book is a great find for any Oracle DBA that needs to upgrade or migrate their databases. Even if your databases are all currently at the latest/greatest release, this book is still vital for your career down the road. At some point in the future you will need to upgrade to Oracle 13c or 14c or migrate from one OS to another.

As an Oracle DBA for over a decade, I make a point of keeping myself up-to-date by reading the standard texts as they become available. As such, I have read texts from almost all the Oracle gurus (Kytes, Alapati, Khun, et al). While these esteemed authors have written extensively about the different facets of Oracle RDBMS, but nobody has covered the all important topics ofa, Database Upgradesb, Database Migrationc, Database PatchingAnd this is where this book shines. All these topics are discussed in detail and all possible options are discussed. In my opinion, practicing the scenarios listed in this text will give a DBA a solid foundation in upgrade, migration, and patching methodologies. All in all, I had truly enjoyed the book and I highly recommend it to fellow DBAs.As a suggestion, I wish the authors will include the all important topic of "database refreshes" in the future edition ofthis text.

Amazing way of explaining the concepts and they have covered all aspects of upgrade and migrations methods. Simple language , great explanation and the way one chapter follows the other chapter depicts their in-depth knowledge and command over upgrades and Migrations and also how technical good these people are.
